Q. There are so many shampoo, conditioners and styling products on the market today. How do I know I’m getting the right one for my hair?

A. You’re right. There are many to chose from. Here are some suggestions:

  1. First, talk with your stylist. She’s the best one to help you, because she knows your hair, your scalp and what is best suited to your situation.

  2. Our recommendation is that you use professional salon products. Since these products are more expensive (but they do carry guarantees), you may find it easier to purchase your shampoo and conditioner from your salon, and then use styling products from the store if necessary. We recommend salon shampoos and conditioners more because these are the actual “working” products. These affect the cleanliness and condition of the scalp.

  3. When purchasing styling products from the store, make sure alcohol is at least the 5th item on your list of ingredients. Alcohol is drying to the hair (as is witch hazel). While it is necessary for the distribution and fast-drying in hair spray, you still don’t want much of it in your gels, mousses, etc. This is one area where the mid-price or more expensive will probably be better for your hair. The quality of ingredients is better.

  4. If you find that you must purchase shampoos and conditioners in the store, look for those products specifically suited to your hair, ie: if you have a perm, look for shampoo for “permed” or “chemically treated” hair. In conditioners, look for labels as, “for fine, limp hair”, etc. Again, this is an area where the mid-price or more expensive is better for your hair. The ph balance tends to be better matched to that of hair.
