Q. It used to be, when I went for
my haircut, my stylist would just cut my hair and let me leave. The cost
was $12. Now, however, she insists on shampooing my hair before cutting and
then dries and styles it. Now she charges $20. Is this fair?
A. Most salons now require a
shampoo before cutting...even for men. This is because:
-
You get a better cut with clean hair because your not
having to “fight” through gels or hair spray;
-
It allows the stylist to get a good “feel” for your
hair while also checking out the condition of your scalp, and the true
“type of curl” is better able to be seen before the cut;
-
It is more sanitary for the stylist;
-
To cut dry hair is dulling for the shears the stylist
uses, and they must be sharpened more frequently (not an inexpensive
event).
-
By drying and styling the hair, the stylist is able to
show you how to handle your new cut and give you tips on managing your
hair. It also allows the stylist to see the cut for themselves after
it’s dry, and make any minor changes necessary.
